History of The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy joins forces with governments, non-profit organizations, local stakeholders, indigenous communities, corporate partners, and international organizations to find solutions to conservation challenges. Their conservation tactics include the protection of private lands, the creation of conservation-minded public policies, and the funding of conservation projects around the world. Among The Nature Conservancys more innovative conservation approaches is the debt-for-nature swaps. Such transactions ensure biodiversity conservation in exchange for debt owed by a developing country. Such debt-for-nature programs have been successful in many countries including Panama, Peru, and Guatemala. History The Nature Conservancy was formed in 1951 by a group of scientists who wanted to take direct action to save threatened natural areas around the world. In 1955, The Nature Conservancy acquired its first parcel of land, a 60-acre tract along the Mianus River Gorge which lies on the border of New York and Connecticut. That same year, the organization established the Land Preservation Fund, a conservation tool that is still used today by The Nature Conservancy to help provide funding for worldwide conservation efforts. In 1961, The Nature Conservancy formed a partnership with the Bureau of Land Management that was aimed at protecting old-growth forests in California. A gift from the Ford Foundation in 1965 made it possible for The Nature Conservancy to bring on its first full-time president. From that point on, The Nature Conservancy was in full swing. During the 1970s and 1980s, The Nature Conservancy setup key programs such as the Natural Heritage Network and the International Conservation Program. The Natural Heritage Network collects information about species distributions and natural communities throughout the United States. The International Conservation Program identifies key natural regions and conservation groups in Latin America. The Conservancy completed its first debt-for-nature swap to fund conservation work in Braulio Carillo National Park in 1988. During that same year, the Conservancy joined forces with the US Department of Defense to help manage 25 million acres of military land. In 1990, The Nature Conservancy launched a large-scale project called the Last Great Places Alliance, an effort aimed at saving entire ecosystems by protecting core reserves and establishing buffer zones around them. In 2001, The Nature Conservancy celebrated its 50th year anniversary. Also in 2001, they acquired Zumwalt Prairie Preserve, a protected area on the edge of Hells Canyon in Oregon. In 2001 through 2005, they purchased land in Colorado that would later form the Great Sand Dunes National Park and the Baca National Wildlife Refuge, as well as expand the Rio Grande National Forest. Most recently, the Conservancy organized the protection of 161,000 acres of forest in the Adirondacks of New York. They also recently negotiated a debt-for-nature swap to protect the tropical forest in Costa Rica.

Even with this, they did not consider their leaders to be divine themselves, as they were simple people who were appreciated by the gods and provided with the right to rule over China and Mesopotamia. Chinas sages promoted the belief that whenever a dynasty collapsed it was because the gods were unwilling to support it any longer and because it was time for another dynasty to replace it one that would receive approval from the gods, certainly. Heaven played an essential role in the Chinese society and people attributed most major changes in their society to how it influenced individuals across China. None Provided4 Persuasive Essay Example For Students

None Provided4 Persuasive Essay Western film theory is generally subdivided into classical theory and contemporary theory. Contemporary theory consists of a theoretical system, which employs psychoanalysis, ideological critique and feminism to interpret cinematic forms. It originated in the mid-sixties and flourished in the 1970s. It was first introduced to China in the early 1980s and brought in as a complete theoretical system a few years later. Peaking in the late 1980s, it should have taken up an important position in the development of Chinas film theory. Classical film theory had developed very slowly in China, and by the end of the 1970s it had acquired the following features:It was a theory about social politics, not about art or cinema, and frequently used as a tool in political struggle, directly serving the politics of the day. (Ke 66)Its artistic theory was insipid, simple and ossified, consisting merely of theories about production transplanted from philosophical dogmas. China had been closed for a long time, and there had been little international exchange, borrowing or debate. Therefore, widespread assimilation of the scholarly achievements of foreign film theory had been impossible and numerous lacunae and defects existed.(Ke 66)Toward the end of the 1970s China chose reform and opening to the outside world. Major changes in film theory were inevitable in order to adapt to the needs of social reform and cinematic innovation and to enrich and improve theory itself. Importing foreign film theory and changing Chinese cinematic concepts were also inevitable. The adoption of any film theory by society is not random but socially and historically determined. A society invariably adopts theories suitable for social development independent of any individuals will. As contemporary film theory was being given a cold reception, making up for what had been missed in classical theory proceeded on a grand scale and along the following lines:Establishing cinematic concepts by exploring the specificity of the cinema, making cinema an art form independent from others, and distinguishing film theory from general art theory to turn it into an independent field. Beginning to focus on cinematic forms of expression and artistic techniques in an attempt to break away from outdated methods centered on the Soviet montage theory, and beginning to use original forms to express fresh contents and feelings. Almost all these efforts to catch up on classical film theory provoked heated debates within the Chinese film world. There were both conflicts and compromises with the old theoretical system. Both sides attempted to devise an authoritative and socially accepted theory that would direct film production and criticism. In the absence of common ground, struggles both open and covert broke out between the left and right. The gap between traditional Chinese film theory and classical foreign film theory was considerably narrowed as a result of these efforts to catch up. However, different social conditions mean that no Western theory can be brought in unchanged, and because of the speed of their introduction, the essence of many theories was not fully understood. Superficial understandings, out-of-context interpretations, misreading and even misrepresentations were unavoidable. Practice had yet to show whether these theories suited Chinese circumstances, and whether they could become a part of a dominant theory. But as the pace of Chinas reforms and opening to the world increased, classical Western theory found itself unable to satisfy the intellectual needs of Chinas film theorists. The film theorists were already casting their gaze toward the outside world again. In the summer of 1984, contemporary Western film theory entered China again, this time through the unusual method of inviting American film scholars to Beijing to run a summer session on film theory. Although unprecedented anywhere in the world, such a method of disseminating contemporary film theory suited the organization of the Chinese cinema studies world. The two Chinese scholars responsible for this event were Cheng Jihua and Chen Mei. .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f , .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f .postImageUrl , .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f , .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f:hover , .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f:visited , .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f:active { border:0!important; } .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f:active , .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0cf81e6a45febbd1ba3fc4448c34dc5f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Embryos EssayCheng and Chen had been invited to give a course on Chinese films in 1983 by UCLA. It was well-received. In the course of extensive contacts with American scholars, they came to feel deeply that Chinese film theory was so narrow, ossified and monolithic that it precluded academic dialogue with foreign countries. A number of American film scholars also wished to see for themselves the enormous changes taking place in China. Thus a daring program for academic exchanges began to take shape. When Cheng Jihua and Chen Mei returned to China, they successfully applied to the Ministry of Culture, then in charge of film, for the China Film Association to run a summer s ession on film theory and invite American scholars to lecture. The two main criteria for the invitees were academic expertise and friendliness toward the Chinese people. Lecture topics were fixed through negotiations between the China Film Association and the American scholars. Ke, Hu. Contemporary Film Theory in Film. 1995: Dangdai Bibliography:

Why I Want to Be a Police Officer free essay sample

For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a police officer. My mother tells me that I left the womb saying â€Å"Freeze, Police! † I’m sure that it was the lights and sirens on a police vehicle that infatuated me. Maybe it was because a police officer carried a gun and had the ability to run red lights. As I grew up, cops and robbers was always a favorite game and I was always the cop. As I grew older, I realized that a police officer was nothing like I thought. I started to understand the role of the police. Not as a symbol of power, but one of peace. I started to understand that society needed an enforcement measure to uphold the laws that have been set. I found that police presence was the best tool to deter crime, creating a safe environment for everyone. Police officers were in the community for all the right reasons, to educate us as children and educate our parents on safety. We will write a custom essay sample on Why I Want to Be a Police Officer or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page They were there when my friends, family, and neighbors needed them. Not only for the worse of times, but in the best.To me a police officer was my hero, and I wanted to return to the community as much as I had gained growing up. I am human, and I have made mistakes in life. Growing up, peer pressure got the best of me. I did my best to overcome the pressures of high school, distancing myself from those bad influences. I have learned from my mistakes and bad decisions I’ve made, expanding my knowledge of the consequences to bad decision making. It was at this point in life that defined me as an individual. Through experience, I’ve learned the best route is the truthful one, no matter how difficult. The Army has taught me discipline and structure. I’ve learned respect and loyalty, and my deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom taught me awareness and compassion. I found that teamwork is the key to success and every task can be accomplished. I have grown from a little boy that wanted to run red lights because I could, to a man that understands the necessity and role of the police in our neighborhoods and communities. I have, and always will want to be a part of making our community safe for all residents and visitors.

Shrek and Donkey Essay Example

Shrek and Donkey Essay Example Shrek and Donkey Paper Shrek and Donkey Paper Shrek was the biggest box office hit of 2001 motion picture developed by PDI DreamWorks studios. It is based on a childrens book by William Steig called Shrek. The film was so groundbreaking; it set a new trend to all CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) films that were out there. Shrek is a unique fairy tale story in disguise, which adds some emotional issues and laughter. The characters not only looked more sophisticated and three-dimensional but their personalities were also more human and less cartoon type; each character would have feelings, like humans. The film uses a constructed text in order to put across a theme of two very different characters learning to work together beyond their rivalries to rise above a common enemy and work towards a common goal. In this case Shrek and Donkey. These two characters are so different they are a perfect example. Shrek is a big, green, smelly, ugly ogre who is selfish wants to keep himself to himself. No one seems to understand Shrek. A good example is when Donkey is speaking to him he describes himself: For your information, theres a lot more to ogres than people think Ogres are like onions layers! Onions have layers Ogres have layers! We both have layers. Donkey gets confused and says he smells, which onions do, Donkey in the other hand is a talking donkey, who is small, smart, loudmouth and energetic. The film uses the characters and imagery very cleverly to represent this theme. The music used in the film is also different to other CGI films. Rather than the characters bursting into song themselves as in Monsters Inc. and Ice Age, or song played by an outside artist, the film has both elements implanted in the film. The soundtrack, like the film, will make you laugh, cry, and laugh again. Songs in the film includes: Stay Home, My Beloved Monster Eels and Hallelujah Rufus Wainwright. These reflect the mood and emotions of the characters in a particular scene. Such as in one seen where Shrek is mimicking a wrestling match with Lord Farquads men, rock music is played in the background. At the end of the film there is a spoof of the characters doing a karaoke sing-along to recognised songs such as Just the Way You Are, Baby Got Back, YMCA, Staying Alive, Dance to the Music, Feelings, Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, and Who Let the Dogs Out. The movie has a storybook start, which provides the narrative of the fairytale princess, locked up alone in her tower. Then Shrek rips the page out of the book and uses it to wipe his backside. This is where the fairytale gets twisted! Modern rock and pop music bring the story into contemporary time, as does the humor used, which includes toilet-humor, irony and parody. Particularly funny is poking fun at theme parks like Disneyland and the use of applause prompt cards to make the audience laugh. Shrek is famed for its detail in a CGI film. The attention is to the smallest detail for example the facial expression of Shrek and Donkey after they view Lord Farquads information board. After they view it a photo comes out and show the facial expression, then the camera switches to Shrek and Donkey showing the exact expressions. The detail is so accurate; it even shows the wrinkles on the forehead, eyebrow shape mouth sticking out and the shadow. This gives the film even more realism and depth. The use of unusual and imaginative camera angles, made possible by the use of CGI, also adds to the texture and pace of the film. The film is set in a world of hatred against fairytale characters. Lord Farquad is the ruler of that world. Lord Farquad was a man who sounded very big but only to be small. He only wanted wealth and power. He is the villain of this film. A very makes a very good example when during a tournament he makes a speech of a great evil tyrant ruler: Some of you may die, but its a sacrifice I am willing to make. In traditional fairy tales, ogres are man-eating beasts. The Prince usually rescues the Princess; they marry and live happily ever after. The makers of Shrek use presentational devices to reverse this traditional, to reveal the ogre as good, and the Prince as evil. One day Lord Farquad dumps all the characters on Shreks swamp. This makes Shrek very unhappy, so he sets out to Lord Farquads kingdom. While Shrek was on his way he meets a donkey named Donkey. Meanwhile Lord Farquad desires to become king. To do this he needs to marry a princess. So he recruits his knights and organizes a tournament to see who would set out to find Princess Fiona for him. At the same time, Shrek enters the kingdom and wants to reclaim the rights to his swamp home. Lord Farquad makes him a deal. Find Princess Fiona in exchange for the deed to his swamp. So Shrek and his loudmouthed sidekick Donkey embark on a quest to find Princess Fiona. Princess Fiona is a dreamer and a feisty young woman who often dreams about her shining knight and armor and true love that will someday rescue her from the tallest tower of a castle guarded by a fire-breathing dragon. But as this fairy tale would have it, Shrek makes a crashing entrance and literally grabs her to safety.

Retirement in America Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Retirement in America - Essay Example 6). The point where an individual discontinues his employment completely, which is called retirement, makes one entitled for private or public pension benefits and the notion of retirement in America has changed over the years. In a historical survey of retirement in America, one comes to recognize that the notion of retirement assumed a great impact on America after World War II and it has undergone essential changes ever since. Unlike the earlier days, there is an emergent notion in America today that "retirement is the beginning of a new and busy chapter of life, a time for continued learning and development, skill building, forming new and purposeful relationships, and giving back to the community Moreover, retirement is 'a time to begin a new chapter' in life and that, just beyond traveling, volunteering is what older adults look forward to most during this new stage of their life" (Johnson, 2003, p. vi). Therefore, the notion of retirement in America has changed over the years and the well-being of individuals after retirement is considered as one of the major responsibilities of the state and the government. Significantly, in the contemporary life of the Americans, retirement in America can effectively offer one of the best periods of life through careful and sensible planning. In this paper, a reflective analysis of retirement in America is offered in order to determine how it has changed from the past, how it will change in the future, which all are the major organizations doing to retirement plans for their employees, and whether employees can retire in America at 62, 67, or will they need to be older etc. Retirement in America In the United States, retirement has been a topic of constant changes over the past several decades - including the consequent attitudes of the people towards retirement, the provisions by the law, Social Security issues, the age of retirement, and other crucial aspects concerning retirement. One of the major responsibilities of the social security programs in America has been to ensure that the individuals who have dedicated their service and potential to the growth of the society are offered the best security programs during their period of old age. Social security has traditionally combined the goals of earnings replacement and income maintenance and the American Social Security system has played a major role in financing retirement. "Despite much criticism, the American Social Security system works fairly well, but only if you consider Social Security payments a handy supplement to other sources of retirement income. Many people who were young when the Social Security system bega n in the 1930's placed too much reliance on it and were forced into difficult financial circumstances in their old age because of inflation. By the 1970's the government began a comprehensive program of tax incentives for various other retirement funds. Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA's), Keogh Plans, and 401(K) plans are some examples." (Financing Retirement, 2007). Therefore, the American Social Security system has contributed heavily to the great changes that have taken place in retirement in America and it is possible that further changes in retirement take place in the future. In America, the rise of retirement started more than a century ago, unlike the commonly conceived notion that it was with

Research paper( Violent Games Are Contaminating Childrens Paper

( Violent Games Are Contaminating Childrens Personalities) - Research Paper Example The games are designed in a manner that instills realism to the games and the moment one plays them it gives a natural feeling (Shaffer & Kipp, 2010). Initially, the games were developed for mere entertainment purpose but over time the objective has shifted to include other aspects that are unfavorable to young children who are mostly addicted to these games. For instance, the video game Grand Theft Auto vice city is a mission-based video game that incorporated wrong vices such as violence, crime and prostitution. This indeed is wrong as the games instill wrong traits to the people who play them. But despite the negative vices that comes along the games they also have positive impacts on the gamers as they help them develop a high degree of judgment & problem solving as the games provides them with dilemma situations where critical decision have to be made and which have great impacts on the overall progress of the game (Gunter, 1998; Child Development Institute, 2003). According to psychology, the personalities of human beings tend to vary and thus different people will possess different personality traits depending on certain factors that have influenced the growth of that particular person (Gentile, 2003). Research conducted by Pennsylvania State University indicated that children who play video games are prone to be more hostile if they are less conscientious, less agreeable and easily angered (Shaffer & Kipp, 2010). This group of children is said to be the one that is negatively affected by playing video games. However despite impacting negatively on the said children violent games which are mainly mission based offer the players an opportunity to learn new skills especially rational and critical thinking skills that aid in solving complex problems (Anderson, Gentile & Buckley, 2007). That notwithstanding, video games in general have always been associated with addiction as children and teenagers are perceived to be

Not yet forgotten Essay Example for Free

Not yet forgotten Essay There have been many wonderful periods of time in my life and the one I have chosen to talk about here is high school. Not the English type of high school, but the Romanian one: those four years before university. Before I had got there, I had already got used to the idea that school is an unlikely place for friendships to occur and it cant get any better than boredom and stress. Nevertheless, it was with hope and confidence that I stepped into the high school entrance. From the very first day I could feel something was going on well. I had a cheerful feeling and I was very comfortable and motivated. People would mind their own business and, if they had to choose, would rather be nice to each other. It was there that I really met people who appreciated me and with whom I could get on. Each morning here I must make clear that I am a night owl I got up with a smile on my face, even if outside was still dark. I would then take the bus and watch the sunrise on my way to the last station. The buses at that time of the day were terribly crowded and despite the fact that us pupils had special buses on which others werent allowed to board, no-one respected that rule. Afterwards, I would have to walk to the high school for about ten minutes past a great statue of a Romanian revolutionary and fighter which had different backgrounds, depending on the weather. The statue was in front of a cathedral for which the city is famous: an enormous, astonishingly beatiful Orthodox cathedral built in the middle ages. It was a very energizing feeling watching so many people go to work or school in the centre of the city. The buzz managed to nudge me from my semi-conscious state of mind in which I was still, due to the early hour of the morning when I had lessons and had to get up. It is true that the spirit of a place is given by the people in it. Obviously, not all my classmates were great friends, but those who were taught me lots of things about peoples behaviour and what really counts, directly and indirectly. They let me know that I can really be loved for who I am and that being yourself is worth it. The teachers were, for the first time ever, happy to teach us and be part of the education system. The lessons were fun, informative and, although quite tiring, we would all leave the high school at the end of the day with a smile on our face, if not laughing. That single year of high school was definitely one of the most rewarding experiences I have had until now. Sometimes my friends and I would skip classes and go to a pub in the city centre, but these naughty adventures will take their place in another story, another time.

The Craft of the Cover Essay -- Music Artist

There is nothing new under the sun. This could be considered to be the unofficial credo of the Postmodern movement, and it wouldn’t be an inaccurate statement to make. There are few universal themes; the pursuit of love, the satisfaction found in hard work, the youthful struggle against the status quo, the hatred of oppression and control being among those most often quoted, and there are only so many ways to package and repackage these messages in a fashion readymade for public consumption. Pop culture is like a melting pot for these ideas. It is a cultural stew brimming with themes and Grand Narratives. And yet the Postmodernists scorn the idea that there can be new themes discovered, and new modes of presenting those themes in a perfect, complete way. This struggle to discover new ways of revealing truth to the public has caused artists throughout history to turn to cover songs. And this use of covers has become emblematic of the Postmodern philosophy, whether due to the s tagnation of the creativity of young artists, or the nostalgia with which Postmodernists view the past. A cover song is a song that is played by an artist other than the original creator. If I were to start a band and play â€Å"Smoke on the Water† by Deep Purple, I would be covering their song. Performances of old hymnals and American spiritual folk tunes like â€Å"House of the Rising Sun† and â€Å"Where Did You Sleep Last Night?† are all covers, simply played by artists as a means of connecting with their audience through mutually well known songs. In the 1950s and 60s, however, the purpose of covers began to change. Record companies began having artists rerecord songs, â€Å"for the purposes of disseminating it among a broader or different section of the record-buying pub... ...he sun. Works Cited Dimaggio, Paul. Female Bounding Colour Purple Essay

Do you agree with the view that the British actions at Amritsar were justified in the aftermath of world war one The British actions at Amritsar were justified in the aftermath of world war one to an extent. The war seemed to boost the self esteem on Indians and unite them, suggesting threat against the raj, however the view in source 10 shows that there was no proof of a conspiracy, source 11 agrees with this but also shows why dyer might have acted in this way. Source 12 agrees with the fact that the actions were justified in the aftermath of world war one. The aftermath of world war one increased the self esteem if Indian as they were fighting alongside British soldiers, it also strengthened the arguments of the Indian politicians that India should be given a greater say in Indian affairs, this suggests that Indian nationalism was starting to progress. Muslims and Hindus had also joined together, forming the Lucknow pact, which shows that the Indians were becoming more powerful as they were joining together but the day of the massacre in Amritsar only included mostly Sikh people who were gathered to celebrate their religious festival showing that the attacks weren’t necessary. local officials also went on strike as a result of the aftermath of the war, suggesting that support for the raj was crumbling, showing that maybe the action of the British at Amritsar were due to the fear of Indian nationalism and the falling support for the raj. However source 10 clearly says that â€Å"it is not proven that any conspiracy had been formed† and that Dyer had acted â€Å"beyond the necessity of the case† showing that his action was not necessary and fair as there was no proof and evidence at the scene at jailaiwad bagh to justify that the actions of the British. Source 11 is a letter by Dyer saying that if he had hesitated it would have â€Å"induce attack† showing that the British might of felt that the Indians had gained power after world war one so they might attack . The source also suggests that there was no proof that there was going to be an attack, but dyer assumed it and therefore has fired without warning, this supports source 10 which says that it wasn’t proven that there was a â€Å"conspiracy†, showing that dyers actions were not necessary. However after world war one hartal were being organised to protest against the Rowlett acts, the two men who had started these hartals were arrested by the authorities, this lead to riots in Amritsar. The riots soon turned into an anti European attack, European women and children were beaten. Therefore source 11 could suggest that the reason Dyer fired without warning at the â€Å"dense crowd† was due to his fear of an attack as there were meetings being held in jalilawad bagh discussing the Rowlett acts, therefore dyer had presumed that a similar result to the Amritsar riots was bound to happen. The result of the riots at Amritsar support source 12, which is a letter by the European women thanking dyer for his actions which â€Å"saved the Punjab and thereby preserved the honour and lives of hundreds of women and children† this show that the women has felt threatened by what had happened at the riots which they also presumed would of happened at jailiawa bagh. However there was no proof on the day of the massacre that there was a conspiracy or any form of rebellion. To conclude, the British actions at Amritsar were justified in the aftermath of world war one to an extent , the Indian confidence had risen and they started to unite which shows that they were heading towards nationalism which was a threat to the raj, the Amritsar riots had also made an influence of the actions of dyer on the day of the massacre as many European women and children were killed , this might of showed that the same was bound to happen in jalianwala bagh as many people were gathered together and some were also discussing and protesting against the Rowlett acts. However as it says in source 10, â€Å"it is not proven that any conspiracy had been formed to overthrow British power† suggesting that dyers actions were necessary as there was no proof on the day.

Definition of Compound Sentences and How to Use Them

In a writers toolkit, few things are more versatile than a compound sentence. By definition, these sentences are more complex than a simple sentence because they contain two or more  independent clauses. They are what gives an essay detail and depth, making your writing come alive in the readers mind. Definition In English grammar, a compound sentence can be thought of as two (or more) simple sentences joined by a conjunction or an appropriate mark of punctuation.  It is one of the four basic sentence structures. The others are the  simple sentence, the  complex sentence, and the  compound-complex sentence. Regardless of how you structure a compound sentence, it signals to the reader that you are discussing two equally important ideas. There are three primary ways of doing so. Coordinating Conjunctions A coordinating conjunction indicates a relationship between the two independent clauses, whether contrasting or complementary. It is by far the most common means of joining clauses to create a compound sentence. Example: Laverne served the main course, and Shirley poured the wine. Spotting a coordinating conjunction is fairly easy because there are only seven to remember: and, but, for, nor, or, so, and yet. Semicolons A semicolon creates an abrupt transition between the clauses, usually for sharp emphasis or contrast. Example: Laverne served the main course; Shirley poured the wine. Because semicolons create such an abrupt transition, use them sparingly. But you can write a perfectly good essay and not need a single semicolon. Colons In more formal written instances, a colon may be employed to show a direct, hierarchical relationship between clauses.   Example: Laverne served the main course: It was time for Shirley to pour the wine. Using a colon in a compound sentence is rare in everyday English grammar; youre most likely to encounter its use in complex technical writing. Simple vs. Compound Sentences In some occasions you may be unsure of whether the sentence youre reading is simple or compound. An easy way to find out is to try dividing the sentence into two simple sentences. If the result makes sense, then youve got a compound sentence. Simple: I was late for the bus. The driver had already passed my stop. Compound: I was late for the bus, but the driver had already passed my stop. If the result does not make sense, however, you have a different kind of sentence.  These may be simple sentences, with no  subordinate clauses  or they may contain subordinate clauses: Simple: When I left the house, I was running late. Compound: I left the house; I was running late. Another way to determine whether a sentence is simple or compound is to look for  verb phrases  or  predicate  phrases: Simple: Running late, I decided to take the bus. Compound: I was running late but I decided to take the bus. Lastly, bear in mind that while compound sentences are great for varietys sake, you shouldnt rely on them alone in an essay. Complex sentences, which contain multiple dependent clauses, can express detailed processes, while simple sentences can be used for emphasis or brevity.
